    I fully agree, yes. But at this time I was in urge to get rid of the MS crap and the last stable release of slackware was about 18 months old.

    Having a too quick look, I feared that the old 3.x kernel would be a problem with my new hardware (it did, but with Debian's too).

    I doubt there is much difference in the age of applications between Slackware and Debian. Both are conservative distributions that value stability above new and shiny.
