USB webcam: micro works, camera not
After a lot of years with Ubuntu I switched to Elementary OS 6.1. Unfortunately there is a problem with my USB webcam that I use on video conferences. lsusb recognizes it, the microphone works, but not the camera. Is there anybody who can help? :-)

What applications have you tried with the cam?
|
Thanks for replying! :-)
I used "Camera" (elementary OS app), google's "Hangout", "bigbluebutton" video conference app... As I wrote: webcam microphone works, camera not... |
Google has abandoned Google hangouts
https://tech.co/news/google-hangouts-replaced Google has suggested using Google meet This may work or it may not. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fir...-app-launcher/ I suggest trying meet see if the cam video works. |
It was actually "meet" I used, I just named it "hangout"...
So, in "meet" it doesn't work either... :-( But thanks for your help! |
|
Thank you! That might(!) fix google problems, but not the problems with the system camera apps...

From what I remember elementary only has its package manager which is limited. Unless The elementary team installed synaptic by default? You can install synaptic by the command-line. You will need webcam software to access the webcam locally.
Code:
sudo apt install synaptic |
Hello dave67! :-)
I appreciate your help, but it seems that up to now I didn't describe my problem as needed. I already have 2 apps installed, "camera", that comes with the installation of elementaryOS, and "webcamoid". Both apps recognize the microphone function of the external webcam, but NOT the video function... |
I assume it was working on Ubuntu before you switched to Elementary Os?
What are the results of this command Code:
ls -ltr /dev/video* |
Right: It was working on Ubuntu.
And here is the output: Unable to access '/dev/video*': File or directory not found |
Looks like Ubuntu has a driver that elementary does not.
Might have to install this tool Code:
sudo apt install hwinfo Than please type post the output. Code:
sudo hwinfo --usb |
The output is:

It looks to get a kernel bug with this webcam. Not the webcams fault. Please type
Code:
Uname -r Here is the bug report not a good read though :) https://www.mail-archive.com/ubuntu-...sg5988830.html |
Yes, it's elementaryOS 6.1. And output: 5.13.0-30-generic
