What is, and what is not, a "Networking" question?
In order to help members get better responses to potentially network related questions, here's a brief guide as to what is and is not best posted in the "Linux - Networking" forum here at LQ.org.
Essentially this forum is for questions about networking itself, not questions about applications and services which use networking capabilities. For those familiar with the OSI networking model, we're generally sticking between layers 1 and 4, and maybe a little bit of 5 sometimes. So please post your questions about issues such as
So what doesn't really belong here? Potentially network leaning questions that generally belong the Linux - Server forum, would be things such as:
Additionally, there are questions best put into Linux - Software, Linux - General, Linux - Desktop etc...
There's always questions which do blur the boundaries, but hopefully this should give you pointers as to where best put your thread to get the exposure it really deserves. * well... if anyone's going to know how to configure a Cisco 6509 here, they'll probably be drawn to this forum. |
What about stuff like remote desktop networking? I know it involves a server, but it also involves networking...

most things "involve" a network, but something like using remote desktop assumes that the network is there as a given. if it's not there, then you have a networking issue, not a remote desktop issue. Obviously a firewall can alway sbe inbetween to annoy you etc... but either vnc is poorly, or you're router isn't working, not both.
