Desktop Slackware
Hey,
I'm currently playing around with the idea of making my own distro (for personal use) based on slackware, but I have a few questions first and was hoping some of you other slackers can help answer them. Slackware, is the distro I use on my desktop and I simply love it. Now my questions are: Since Pat provides all of the source code for slackware, freely available off of a slackware mirror, along with the .Slackbuilds, would it be possible to just download a base system and compile it, place my selection of preferred apps ontop of it and then repackage it in an iso for easy installs? My plan (goal) is make a desktop only version of slackware, based on the 2.6 kernel. I'm not afraid of doing a lot of work. If anyone can help, or even point me to a few helpful websites or if this has been answered before somewhere else, I would be very thankful. Thanks in advance. |
probably, the answer to your question is yes. check this out: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=261814

Well, I did a little bit of brainstorming and some research.
This is what I have so far: I will install a Slackware Base system (or maybe even vector linux, based on slackware, which is already very trimmed) onto my second drive. I will trim, nip and tuck whatever I see fit, and then install a 2.6 kernel. Use the already made kde 3.3.1 binaries made by Pat. Polish will come later, such as a bootsplash and whatever else I feel will make it feel more like a "user friendly desktop". Once I get a base, I need to look into how to repackage it all with an installer, maybe just a hacked version of the Slackware installer. I'll post more as I progess. Feel free to post ideas or helpful tips. Thanks. |
Also add the Dropline GNOME for GNOME fans....add Enlightment etc and I'm ur man :)

MAybe you could have a look at www.collegelinux.org . It seems they are working on a new version. I don't see the advantage of another Slackware based distro. But that's only my opinion. :)

Yes, to be honest, I don't want to add to the amount of distro's there are on the already overly long list.
However, bad forks die and good ones strive... so you never know. I managed to get a lot more work done and I'm testing a livecd of what I have so far... it's nothing special but I think it's pretty damn good. BTW: Dropline is awesome and I have used it many times before. Maybe I'll use it as a default desktop. |
