PPP and KPPP help

I just installed Vector Linux 6.0 and set up PPP under system admin, and then went to my desktop and set up KPPP to use for dial-up.
Did I make a mistake setting up PPP? Will this interfere with using KPPP to dial out? If yes, how do I undo the PPP setup?
And also, when I set up KPPP, the modem dial out, then says, connecting to network, then it drops the connection and redials again and again, but never connects. Does anyone have any idea what I did wrong?
Note: I first tried using an Actiontek serial modem. That didn't connect as described above, so I switched to a U.S. Robotics modem, and got the same results. The Actiontek modem does work on Wary5 Linux.
I used manual setup for KPPP. Authentication: I used PAP, then tried CHAP, and also tried PAP/CHAP, and none of these worked. It should be set to PAP, right?
IP Configuration is Dynamic.
Gateway config is: Default gateway.
DNS: I didn't put anything in "Domain name"--left it blank. Should I put something in there?
Configuration: Automatic
Modems:
U.S. Robotics
Modem Device: /dev/ttyS0
Flow Control: Hardware [CRTSCTS]
LIne termination: CR
Connection Speed: 115200
I did not use the lock file.
Modem time out: 60 sec
Modem: Wait for dial tone before dialing.
Busy wait: 0 sec

Any help here would be appreciated.

Problem found

OK, all, I found the problem. It was one of those dumb things. Thanks for your time. The problem was not with the computer or OS, but the nit-wit running it. :o
