mario8723, how long did the arch linux install take? I'm sort of torn between arch and gentoo but gentoo apparently takes 6 hours to install :/

Also I used slackware and found that it just didn't work, at least not very well and it didn't do anything I wanted it to. Though to be fair pkgtool is really impressive and the install is a complete breeze.

You can get a base Arch system up in 5 minutes or so if you know your way through the installer. The reason Gentoo takes so long is because everything is compiled from source specifically for your system, 6 hours is a very fast install for Gentoo, I managed to get it up and running in around that time once but I'd installed it a few times before and had a fair idea what I was doing. But what do you expect when using a from-source distro? Can't have everything...

Well I'm really glad that you got it fixed, now you can enjoy the kickass WM known as fluxbox, along with the kickass distro known as Arch of the kickass OS known as GNU/Linux.


That's 3X the asskicking of windows!

I also recognized Arch as an alternative, but I'm waiting to give it a try until the dev's hopefully rethink some things (network install is a pain on 64k downstream). Anyways, I wish you a lot of fun with this distro - perhaps you can report some feedback to some Slackers like me :-)

You don't have to do a network install, just use the full CD-image. I prefer to use the network install though, so that i can be certain that my system is completely up to date after the install. I think you might want to take a look at this distro. I am currently running dual boot with Arch and Slackware because i love them both.

I just started using Arch about 3 days ago. It reminds me a lot of Slackware with one big difference; pacman. Slackware's short coming in my opinion was its package management. Arch has filled that gap.

I just have a few minor issues I have to work out and my Arch machine will be perfect. I'm really digging it.

Anybody know what the preferred programming language is for Arch? Like, what is pacman written in?

pacman is written in C but like most distros, you can do almost anything with python

Here we go again. Sigh...

I decided to install Arch on my main machine. Pacman'd xorg and hwd but I'm having a problem starting x now. My xinitrc seems to be okay with an echo "exec startkde" > ~/.xinitrc thrown in for good measure.

The problem seems to be numerous font renderers? I'm getting errors for about 8-9 font renderers already configured somewhere else or something to that effect? Does anybody have any suggestions at all what to do with this?

Well, I reinstalled Arch again, this time with the 0.7 iso as opposed to the base-iso that I did the first time. Ran xorgconfig, edited the xinitrc file and everything worked fine this time. Not quite sure what the issue was previously, but it's fixed now.

Currently have KDE 3.4 running, but I'm looking to try a different WM/DE. Any favorites out there? I have previously tried fluxbox and it was ok. Any other experiences with blackbox, icefwm etc?

Also, if it helps any, I tried configuring alsa as well and it gave me the same error I believe...

I've been a die hard flubbox'er for a while now. Its so customizable and efficient. Here is my new arch install:

I had "tried" fluxbox the 1st time I installed Arch. Admittedly, as a Linux noob, it was completely different from Gnome and KDE and a bit overwhelming to use, since not everything is laid out for you.

I want to try and use fluxbox or enlightenment etc but they seem very daunting to just "setup". I was playing around with enlightenment last night a bit, but I can't even figure out how to do something simple like change a desktop background. I will admit that I haven't looked at any documentation, but then again, I've checked for about the last hour and can't find ANYTHING on how to setup enlightenment ANYWHERE. Including their home page!

Am I blind? Does anybody have any links/info on how you could begin to use enlightenment from a square one perspective?

I may switch to flux just for the simple fact that I know they have documentation on their web site...

And btw, I'm using DR16.7 which is the only version available via pacman as far as I can tell. So the unofficial guid to DR17 won't work...

Btw Seppel, you NEED to get ARCH!!!

Your not blind. Everything is done in configuration files with fluxbox. If you give it a go, pacman -S fluxbox-devel so you get all the goodies with the devel version. Then add fluxbox to .xinitrc(exec fluxbox). Then you will have a .fluxbox directory in your home directory. All the conf files are in there.

If you need further assistance I'll be glad to give you my configuration files. Also, the fluxbox FAQ is a big help as well.
