Your issues confirms my experiences. I am convinced Manjaro .8.5.2 is very buggy. I was initially persuaded by glowing reviews based around 0.8.4. It's a shame that is not archived as a stable download.
I have been struggling with 8.5.2 for a whole week. I installed XFCE last Sunday. After an uneventful installation, I reboot to find that the desktop would not accept my login. After two attempts it kicked me off into a terminal. The terminal did accept my login with user prompt.

I tried to follow some of the trouble shooting provided by the techies here. Like check my psswd file, which showed up username. Unfortunately, since I am very rusty with linux terminal commands, the solutions provided by the techies here, such as to check my passwd file which showed I am listed as a user. I checked whether the login problem was relate4d to faulty keboard in a text editor.
The other solutions such as output of dmesg or error logs, just were not helpful or practical since there was no way I knew how to output the output files to an external drive in order to copy over to a working OS. I am rusty on terminal cammands. Nor did I have time research it.
The only other thing I can think of might have been my graphic driver. But that is pure speculation.
I tried to see if Openbox had similar problems. This time the OS installed and allowed me to login to the desktop. However, on second boot it broke my dual boot loader. Fortunately, I had backed up all my data.
However due to time constraints, it'S taken all my spare time, almost a week to rebuild my dual boot system.
So much for Manjaro...
