Unhappy flash and java issues

O.K., I'm posting for the first time. I read very many pages in this forum looking for some kind of direction. I have an IBM thinkpad, p3, 1000mhz, 512 ram, 20 gb hd, pcmcia card, and usb mouse. I downloaded and installed flash 10 and latest java. After I agreed to the questions, I copied the plugin to both my opera plugin and bon echo plugin directories. I also did the same for java. But when I went back into both browsers, neither one was installed. I downloaded the self-extracting files and the rpm's just to see if either one worked for me, but I got nowhere. Does someone have any answers for me?
I'm running dsl 4.4.10 with netscape 5/ bon echo 2 that came with the livecd and also Opera 852 from mydsl database. I downloaded the firefox from mydsl database that already had flash installed, but when I opened it, the message in the window was that the version was not supported anymore and there were security issues related to that particular browser. Obviously, I cannot run that, but I cannot install firefox 3.0 because my system cannot support it for some reason. I've been trying to get this to work for the last three weeks straight entirely on my own. I've come to the conclusion that I cannot do it on my own.
Someone tell me what I'm doing wrong. If I didn't provide enough info, let me know and I will gladly fill you in. Like I said, this question has been asked before, but I have failed to see this particular problem. Of course, after 20+ pages of reading, I figured this would be the perfect time to give up and ask for help.

thanks again!

p.s. dslinux is the best livecd ever!! No other os would work on my thinkpad (including ubuntu, if you can believe that!!)

I'm having a similar problem, I think.

I have a Toshiba Tecra 8100 with 128 mb memory and an 11 gb disk which I installed DSL 4.4.10 on, and I want to use tdameritrade.com command center, which needs the 1.5 JRE. So I install it from the myDsl, but it still says I need to install the plugin.

In the newer version of Firefox, it has Plugins, and with the newer debian, there is a java plugin for mozilla, and installing that solved it.

Of course the old Toshiba isn't very "snappy" running bigger o/s's, so I'm trying to find the most memory and processor efficient one I can to run on it.

BTW, so far the best one out there that will do it is antiX M8, another debian offshoot, because it does support the newer Firefox version and java plugin, but it does use a lot more memory for the o/s as compared to DSL, and isn't as quick coming up.

It looks like DSL is based on the Woody version of Debian. Is that why it can't run the newer browsers that incorporate the java plugin, or is just that I didn't install something, or didn't install something correctly?

I also saw a post on putting something in a plugin directory, but it wasn't sufficiently detailed for me to know exactly how and what to link to exactly where.

I never could get it to install either flash or java
so I caved and went back to Windows. I couldn't help it.
(yes, I know, but I still kept DSL on my hard drive partition)
In the end, I guess it wasn't really anything else I could do. Oh well!
DSL still rocks!!
