Hi,

probably a good idea to start a new thread since the topic has changed from network configuration to dual booting Slackware and Debian.

I was wrong Evo2-

I thought that my WiFi was working....it's not and I installed the driver and restarted--

I think I know what the problem is-
I was not prompted for a root password during the installation process.
The DVD sat for a long time in idle-

How can I make a new root password so I can install the wifi driver?

Hi,

there are many ways. The best one to use depends on your current situation. Eg do you have a root shell? CAn you boot to some other OS/rescuedisk and mount the partition containing /etc/passwd? However if the Debian installer didn't ask you to set a root password then something quite strange has happened, an who knows what other issues your new system may have.

Yes I have a terminal.
I have a Slackware DVD/CD that I could use.

If I do boot the Live Slackware CD how could I get to /etc/passwd?

I tried these instructions but it would not let me change the passwd and when I did the termianl returned:
Code:
password unchanged
http://www.debianadmin.com/how-to-re...-password.html

I think because the Live Debian DVD/CD sat idle for so long may have been why I wasn't prompted for a root passwd.

You would need to identify and mount the correct partition, and then you can edit the /somewhere/etc/shadow file to delete the root password (or chroot but not sure doing that from slackware).

I don't know what happened there.

It sounds more like an incomplete installation to me.

I agree and since I do, I have decided that it would be best for me to perform a fresh installation again.
So....I'm off to do just that.

I'll bb to let you know how things go-

I just finished a fresh installation.

Something is wrong.
I sign in the screen goes black and flashes and brings me back to the login in again.
It just continues to repeat and never makes it to the GUI-

Any idea?

Check the log files. Eg /var/log/Xorg.0.log and ~/.xsession-errors.

Do you have a cell phone?
If you do, you should be able to tether it for network connection.

When that happens I install the firmware-linux packages there are 3 of them, firmware-linux, firmware-linux-free & firmware-linux-nonfree.
