Just wondering what you all think of FC4 ? Is it the best version of Fedora ?
Is it worth installing ? (I have a spare machine sitting under my desk, just thought i might put it to some use . . . .
it SUCKS,SUCKS, SUCKS...............................
been linux user since core 2 and this core4 it really sucks when it comes to installing it...
computer hangs on white screen............
pleade DO NOT b.s me about is an ISO thing couse is NOT.................
tried many downloads many cd's few burners...same.............
tried passing argument or parameters when booting '''''''''NOTHING''''''
AND B.S ME about saying install in text mode...well it went very good UNTIL I REBOOT IT.. GOT THE SAME WHITE SCREEN ...............
final thought about fc4 SUCKSSSSSSS...................
I did not have any problems with installation, I tried both, a new installation and an update from Fedora Core 3. Both worked fine.
If you have FC3 and you already using Gnome 2.10 and/or Kde 3.4 you won't find too much new.
If you want to be on the bleeding edge trying virtualization with Xen, then that will be a good use for your spare computer, although Xen is heavy on requirements.
I still use FC3 as my main desktop but have one partition with FC4. Why? repositories. Not all the yum repositories I use have converted to FC4. What this means is that some applications will break (In my case it was amule. It expects a newer version of libraries than what the official FC4 repositories have)
I am waiting a little bit until I fully switch to FC4.
If you still want to know what else is new, read this article.
I'll add my endorsement of FC4. I had a few problems with the Test versions (probably why they were in test!), but since the release version has come out, it loaded without a problem. I did an upgrade on my 64-bit desktop and a new install on my 32-bit laptop--both were frighteningly easy.
I did a fresh install of FC4 and had no real issues. My Ati video card even worked after getting the drivers from livna. The only problem I have is scratchy sound from supertux (xmms and everything else is fine so I'm not real worried).
I will agree -- the installation was totally painless. USB printer/scanner detection, ATI card, USB Creative SB card -- all went perfectly. 20 minutes up and running. I tinkered with MP3 and multimedia a bit, java, etc. 2 hours of tinkering here and there. Done.
I use FC4 in my thinkpad .... it is DAMN fast and reliable .... the boot time .... i think its much faster than FC3 ... it took less than 1 minute ... overall .... gcc4 really makes FC4 a speed demon ....
I just moved from RH 9 shrike to FC 4 and I thinks it really kicks ass
of course its still has some bugs but it has only been out for a month.
bug that I found ar using up2date that shows updates at 0kb value.
and the fact that I cant use apostrophes, but that should just be a minor problem that i can resolve later just googleing it
bout the aposthrophe bug,... try checking ur keyboard setting.... happened to me once, when i change the keyboard setting from US International to US English ... the aposthrope works...
