For those interested I am on the new Openindiana live operating system and everything so far is working straight out of the box...

ps I did send in my hardware details when it was the Indiana project so I may be fortunate, having said that though,I bet its got really good hardware detection and figuring.

linus72 you wont have to wait for long... its a live CD and I am finding a few things like the package manager seems to have permission problems, its using the latest Nvidia driver but it has a vesa option if you need it. I want to install a Solaris system too but I will check this one out thoroughly before I do,sound and the internet are working out of the box,its pretty basic but that dos,nt detract from the fact that its a Solaris system... lovely
Its not detecting any of my other drives but I am hoping that it will be at least a good starting point for eventually ending up with an all singing dancing Solaris system... LOL

ps I recommend you download the .iso and give it a try, bear in mind that I have sent in my hardware details about two years ago,I would be interested if it works for you as well.

Talking

Linus72 as you can see in the screen shot it has a utility called device driver,I used that a couple of years ago to send in my hardware details,it collects you hardware data and sends it in to the mothership... do it from the live CD. hopefully !

OI running in VirtualBox

Dunno why I care, I just thought it would be neat to try out a UNIX-like that isn't a Linux or a BSD.

I've also tried to compile Neverball on it, but haven't succeeded so far, probably because I'm too dumb to realize that it's a pointless, stupid idea.

Alt+F2, "ccsm".

Solaris Guest Additions work in VBox with OpenGL support, but every time I start Compiz, the CPU load goes to 100%. I look in top and it shows that Xorg is taking up most of the CPU time...not sure why that is, though. Plain old OpenSolaris didn't have this problem with GA/Compiz.

One interesting problem about VBox Guest Additions...some VMs have issues with Compiz.

I just did a re-install of my OpenSolaris VM because it was having this strange problem where if I enabled Compiz, it would crop the usable display area to 640x480 and "blit-smear" animations. It didn't help.

Screenshot

This happens with other OSes, too, so I'm not sure if it's a problem with OpenSolaris. metacity --replace puts it all back to normal on OSOL, but on OI CPU usage remains at 100%.

So, OpenIndiana + Compiz = full-throttle CPU usage, and OpenSolaris + Compiz = cropped, unusable desktop. I just can't win, can I?
