Can't install ".tar.gz" and "tar.bz2"

Hello,

I am new to this forum and some what of a newbie with linux but I am trying to install some applications that are .tar.gz or .tar.bz2.

For example I am trying to install Bluefish and I extract it with "tar -xf bluefish-1.0.5" and it makes the folder in the home directory so I do this:

Quote:
cd bluefish-1.0.5
./configure
and it says

Quote:
checking for gcc... no
checking for cc... no
checking for cc... no
checking for cl... no
configure: error: no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH
I am running SUSE and I just installed it.

You need to install gcc (the gnu c compiler) and gcc-c++. You could just save yourself time and effort by installing bluefish using a package manager such as yast or smart.

How do I install the GNU C Compiler?

Also, I installed it with and RPM and used Yast but I can't seem to find it.

I dont have much experience with suse or many rpm distros for that matter, but you will need to install a package called gcc-4.0 or whatever version it is now. You have to install it with yast or a precompiled rpm(http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat....i586.rpm.html)
and what do u mean by

"I installed it with and RPM and used Yast but I can't seem to find it."

If you run the software tool in YAST and search for gcc (and bluefish), then select them for installation, YAST will automatically install them for your from your installation discs or online sources.
