Question Desktop icons and shortcuts

Hi!

I have a empty desktop and I have not managed to create desktop icons. Even trying the Windows drag-and-drop way.

¿How can I create shortcuts to most used documents in the desktop?

Thanks!

We need to know which Linux distro and desktop environment you are using in order to answer that question.

As said above, way too little information. Guessing it is Ubuntu/Gnome, you can use the instructions at the site below, otherwise you need to post the information asked for in post #2.

So it's GNOME. There's a helpful link already in post #3.

You want shortcuts to the most used documents to automatically appear on your desktop, is that right? What qualifies as a documents to you? For example , only files from a certain folder(s), or files with certain extension(s)?. How many do you want to be there at a time? And how do you define most used, and do you already have anything set up to identify which files? I don't know if any tools to do something like this already exist. How skilled at you at programming or scripting and which language would you want to write this in?

In any case I think you would need some service running all the time to track how often you "use" documents, and then it simlinks the top few to your desktop folder.

Sorry. My mistake. I meant some useful documents I use very often. Selected by me. Not automatically.

You can create Windows-like shortcuts (they are called symbolic links in UNIX - Linux is UNIX) to files or directories, in the following style:

Code:
cd ~/Desktop

ln -s /path/to/some_document.doc

ln -s /path/to/some_directory

I have not a Debian GNOME installation, however in Ubuntu 21.10, the file manager of GNOME, has the ability to create shortcuts, and you can move them to your Desktop folder.

Have a look at the attached images.

Answered in the Site FAQ:

To mark a thread as solved, click "Mark this thread as solved" under the "Thread Tools" menu.
That menu is just above the first post.
