Desktop launcher stored inside Directory won't show icon .

I use my own images/icons in my Desktop Launchers. I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 22.04.

I have a directory called 'Forums' where I have stored all my launchers for forums like 'Linux Questions', 'jquery forum', etc, etc. None of the icons show up on these launchers in the directory. If I take them out of the directory to the Desktop the icons show fine.

Any clue what is going on and how to fix it. I typically have owner/permissions as so:

owner: rick:www-data permissions 764 I've tried 777 and that doesn't work.

Thanks R

Did this work as you wanted in the earlier version and the problem only started with 22.04? Not sure the link below will help but it discusses creating .desktop files on 22.04. Are these 'launchers' files with a .desktop extension? Where are the icon files located, your Forums directory? Gnome/nautiluse developers have been making this more difficult to do in recent years so it is problematic.

I don't know why you have this behavior. My experience (this is with 20.04) is 3 .desktop files I created all of which show the correct icon when in the nautilus file manager Desktop directory but only 2 show the correct icon on the actual Desktop?? Good luck.

I am using Ubuntu 22.04.

Quote:
what is the path to the .desktop files? -> /home/rick/desktop/xxx.desktop
what is the path to the icon files? -> /home/rick/Images/xxxx.images

I just use 'Create Launcher' on the desktop and cut and paste the 'xxx.desktop' file to the directory I want to launch from, in this case, '/home/rick/Forums'.

I have used this scheme for quite a few years - at least thru Ubuntu 16, 18, 20. I don't remember having this problem.

Why are 'people' messing with something that worked fine "to improve it?" which then causes all kinds of grief to use the new version???

If you do an online search about problems with desktop icons with Gnome, you will find countless sites discussing it. The developers don't want desktop icons for whatever technical or other reason. You should be able to find a number of sites discussing how to get around this.
