Unhappy Logon screen missing text and/or garbled

This issue is challenging to describe and several searches through the forums have not yielded any helpful results.

In the first photo, this is what I see when the desktop logon screen appears. After moving the mouse around the area and randomly clicking, the mouse pointer leaves a tracer and there does appear to be logon names and buttons in the mysterious white rectangle. I was able to blindly log in as a user but the menu bar names (Application, System, etc) appear to be missing too.

This system was working ok until today. I'm not sure what triggered the change on this box was the internet connection it uses; I replaced a usb wireless adapter with an ethernet cable connection. When I did this yesterday, I restarted the computer and was able to login and use the computer without issue. Then today, this occured

My last action was to completely reinstall the OS (ubuntu 11.04), wiping the existing partition just to make sure it was a from-scratch reinstall. No good...
