tasksel: aptitude failed (100) - How to

Ok it's my first how to.

It's quite an easy one, but it stumped me for a while, so I thought I'd share it.

I recently installed my new laptop with Ubuntu 9.04 (desktop version) and wanted to add some of the ubuntustudio functions such as 2d/3d imaging etc, previously when I've wanted to do this I'd just run 'sudo tasksel' and select the tasks I wanted, but on this ocassion i kept getting the "tasksel: aptitude failed (100)" error message.

After googling about for a while I didn't see any solutions that worked for me, but I did see that the tasksel command does support switches, so I ran 'sudo tasksel --help' to see what was available, and at the top was the '-t' switch to test. I ran tasksel again with the switch and hey presto, it reproduced the command it was trying to run but it had formatted it incorrectly, so I ran the command again manually without the errors as foolows.

#sudo tasksel
tasksel: aptitude failed (100)

#sudo tasksel --help
Unknown option: help
Usage:
tasksel install <task>
tasksel remove <task>
tasksel [options]
-t, --test test mode; don't really do anything
--new-install automatically install some tasks
--list-tasks list tasks that would be displayed and exit
--task-packages list available packages in a task
--task-desc returns the description of a task

#sudo tasksel -t
/usr/lib/tasksel/info/ubuntustudio-desktop.preinst
debconf-apt-progress -- apt-get -q -y install ubuntustudio-audio^ ubuntustudio-desktop^

I then edit the debconf... bit to remove the ^

#sudo debconf-apt-progress -- apt-get -q -y install ubuntustudio-audio ubuntustudio-desktop

The packages in this command will be different for you so I'd suggest copying and pasting the output after your tasksel -t then delete the ^ from it.

Hope this helps some of you as it did me.

Cheers

Talking Another fix

I had tried your solution but with no luck.

Luckily I've found the solution to my problem, I was using Yakuake (drop-down terminal emulator) to install LAMP using tasksel install LAMP command but it seemed to be stuck at 0% and so I closed that terminal session.

After this, every time I try to run the same command in terminal (like I should have been doing in the first place) it gave out the failed (100) error.

Tried filfish's method but made no difference.

Googled about some more to find https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...el/+bug/131134. Within the posts there is one post which I will paste below:

Quote:
Hi all,

I had the same error message after cancelling the installation process of LAMP task. The system prompted me a suggestion to run the following command (as super user):

sudo dpkg --configure -a

And that finalized the pending installation and solved the problem.

I hope that it works for you also.

Rodolfo
The sudo dpkg --configure -a seemed to almost work but there was an error for the installation of mySQL. Tried the old tasksel command again and it worked a charm.

IF that still doesn't work, make sure no other synaptic/package managers are open. that was my problem.
