suse 9.1 initial impressions

well, the nvidia driver was surprisinly easy to setup. after the distro install, do a manual online update in yast, and you can select the nvidia patch and other things that you would like to install. no more going into telinit 3 and editing the xf86f file. that was easy enough

did not want to install on my gig-ga7n400 pro board with serial adpater on maxtor drive. had to take the serial adapter off and attach to regular idie controller to get it to install. don,t get this, suppose to install on serial drives

suse had gotten away from easy raid installation, espcially on the 2.6 kernal. bummer- use to be done during the install, not such way now.

tryed to get xine dvd player working, no luck. this could be easier, in mepis debian distro i have, all you have to install is the libdvdcss2 file from the apt-get repository, and you are watching dvds.

the distro is pleasant looking, got the professional version which includes 64 bit version too. was surprised to see suse do this.

the kmenu is getting better too with its menu, making it sort of easier for the linux mentally chalenge.

suse has also been making efforts making changes in configuration, such as video card, a bit easier.

this is my first suse since 8.2-skipped 9.0- and am impressed so far. suse 9.1 works well on my nforce 2 gig-ga7400 pro, fast, and the looks are great.

later

thanks for the info, i idid finally get xine running in suse 9.1. its best to use yast instead of the install from the terminal with rpm commands, at least that is what did it for me. figured if i worked at it long enough , i would get it running. really like suse 9.1, didn,t like the price, about $100 at compusa , taxes -etc. at least i don,t have to activate it.

another note on the xine player-i noticed it had just a bit of jerk-ness on playback. went into yast and enabled dma on my dvd drvie. bingo-plays smooth now.
