comport communication

Hi
I'm having problem in making the comports communicate with each other. if a packet is written on one comport and i try to read the packet from another comport (by using "read" and"write" in C), comport is unable to read anything and gets hanged. i have tried changing the settings such as speed to be 9600, using no parity (these changes i made using stty) but that didn't work. Kindly reply soon.
Thanx
