3COM Gigabit LOM (3C940) Inoperative on Gentoo Install

I did the modprobe sk98lin.. I can see in my case the LAN lights up how it should... only it fails to send/receive. It gets the right IP info etc etc. I think this has something to do with duplex mode. By default, sk98lin is full duplex. I saw where somebody using Red Hat got it functional by switching it to half duplex. I don't have the first idea how to get sk98lin to load half duplex off the Gentoo LiveCD.

Pertinent Info:
The 3C940 (aka 3C2000) is onboard Asus P4P800 with latest BIOS revision.

Any help is much appreciated. I saw what a highly optimized 2.6 kernel can do and immediately dropped Mandrake since it's a pain in da butt to install a new kernel and have everything setup nice so you can use nVidia drivers.
