cannot connect to x server

I'm a newbie to linux

I have installed mandrake 10.1 on an old p133. (I'm told mandrake will work on a p133)

I get this message when I launch KDE (startkde)

-----------------------------------
magicdev:3298 Gtk-Warning cannot open display

ksplash: cannoot connect to X server

kdeinit: aborting. $Display is not set

ksmserver: cannot connect to X server

error: can't contact kdeinit
-----------------------------------

I assume this is some sort of video problem.
I have ran xf86config and selected all conservative generic settings.

Hi,

You have to run startx...Cause when you try to run startkde you need to set up some variables like $DISPLAY which are automatically set with startx.
Then if your ~/.xinitrc is correctly configured, it will launch KDE interface

I faced a similar problem no red-hat a number of times. I formatted my partition and re-installed Red-Hat.

Hey.. try kdm instead of startkde cos startkde requires X to be up and running, kdm does that for you itself.

in mandrake console <alt-F1 - F6> (pick one ) log in as root and type drakconf... scroll down to display and follow the prompts... then type as root kdm
