I've recently installed Red Hat 9 and I'm having problems playing cds. The sound card has been detected correctly and plays the guitar test sound OK but I'm unable to hear sound when I play a CD. My sound card model is 82801BA/BAM AC'97 Audio. Thank you.
try typing aumixer or alsamixer from a command line. look for the cd volume level, make the adjustment, and save setting. Depending on your linux distro, you may want to do this as root to save your changes.
Futhermore, some applications need an audio cable between the drive and the sound card. The latest version of xmms is capable of using digital audio extraction.
i have the same problem on my laptop. i think if it were the device to soundcard cable causeing the trouble then it is either a lost cause for laptops or i have to get out the soldering gun. what is it that xmms does with digital media extraction that might help?
xmms (and xine, for that matter) read the audio data in digital form over the ide bus whereas kscd etc rely on an analogue signal output from the cd drive to the relevant input on the sound card, accomplished using an internal patch cable.
