How do I use pcspkr?

I built the pcspkr module. I loaded it. /var/log/messages reports its existence. But I haven't figured how to make a noise. The 'beep' function returns -1. I hoped it would create a device in /dev to which I could write, but it doesn't.

As I reported I loaded pcspkr. lsmod reports its existence. How do I make a noise with it? I read pcspkr.c. /proc/bus/input/devices has:

I: Bus=0010 Vendor=001f Product=0001 Version=0100
N: Name="PC Speaker"
P: Phys=isa0061/input0
S: Sysfs=/devices/platform/pcspkr/input/input18
U: Uniq=
H: Handlers=kbd
B: EV=40001
B: SND=6
