network interface name causing problems

At boot, the system hangs and reports that it timed out trying to rename things like eth1_temp to eth2 etc. When it finally boots, the interface names are always different, and the internet stops working after a short time. When trying to shutdown they system hangs for several minutes at "stopping portmap daemon" and then says something else about the interfaces, and shutsdown. Im not sure whats wrong or what information I need to give so I can fix this so any help is good. thanks
