ok i know seting up samba is suppose to be straight forward but i cant get it too work, i can logon on to my shared folders through linux on to itself, but in windows all i can see is the computer but i cantmap the computer also i cant even view my shares on the computer ??

i have tried to install ksamba but after doing ./configure, make, doenst work it gives errors, ireally need help this to work please help me !!

What exactly happens when you are in network neighborhood in windows? Can you see the linux box? If so when you double click on the linux box do you get an access denied message?

This /etc/samba/smb.conf is a basic config file, It allows anyone to connect whether they have a password or not.

ok im at the point of despair i CANT DO THIS ANYMORE its 3am uk time now and i still havent got this thing working ive been at it since 8pm yesterday !!!! ARRRGGHHHHHHH i cant believe how much of a pian it is becoming i can see the computer but know shareed folders ?? ive tried everything ! man iGIVE UP , is there a packgae that can sort all of it out for me ??

i even downloaded the Ksamba RPm ok when installed i was missing a library so i went i got that but guess what it kept crashing the RPM program so i couldnt install it (i tried to get tehh file from another location but the same bloody thing)

all i wanted to do was share 3 folder on my linux box to my win box, no password not bothered and restricted to the ip range of 192.168.9.XXXX so no other host can acccess it (the ip is not the static range i own for obvious reasons)

but i can get win2k to recognise the computer but thats it! no shared folders nothing just keeps say no path to host or something!"

im sooooooooo PISSED OFF (sorry for the LANGUAGE! but if you were me u would be aswell)

ok i tried the basic file with that hanzerik gave me and made adjustments such has server name and shared folder location etc. (actually that was it) right i saved the file restart the smb service ok, and then restarted windows but it hasnt even found the linux box on the network now ??

i have heard that windows updates it's routing table 9or you know host connected thingy) every so often so when that updates it will have the host there is this correct?


oh guess what its there now???????? i can see the computer (im just gona see if i can see the shared folders)

ok so the problem was the firewall it was stopping win2k from accessing the folders ok, now the problem what rule do i put in so i can have smmaba running rine ??

ok got it working perfectly now, but stillneed a firewall rule that i can use to have firewall up but also have access to samba shares !!! can anyone help here ??

one last thing i have a shared folder /home/downloads

ok now i have folders with int hat folder /home/downloads/mp3

if i want to make a file or dir in /home/downloads i can but if i even try to make or delete a file in anyof the previous sub dir made in downlaods e.g /home/downloads/mp3 it say access denied ?? why is this ? i mean if i create my own one in the downloads dir i can access and do what i want why not with the ones that are already there ??

PS I WILL MAKE A STEP BY STE GUIDE ON HOW TO SORT OUT SAMBA ON WIN2k for ll newbies so no one has to suffer like i did

Good to see you're getting there - once you have it sorted it'll all work fine.

I had a similar problem with samba - windows not being able to access recursive shares. I found it was a problem with permissions.

Try this command from your linux box:

chmod -R a=rwx /path of top shared folder here

This sets permissions for all to have read write and execute access. The -R applies it recursively to all directories.

Can't help you with the firewall rule - I'm not too hot on that - we use a RH router with all our networked puters behind that - the firewall dosen't come into play on our VPN.


ps mail me a copy of your samba howto when you have it sorted. I'm also trying to put together a guide to home networking (our network composes of 1xRH 7.2 router and web server (apache), 1xSuSE 7.1 MP3 erver, 1x SuSE 6.3 WINS, DNS server, 1x SuSE 7.3 CS Server, 2xWINXP Pro clients and 2x Win'98 clients. Three of the client machines also run SuSE 8.)

We had to reconfigure samba when we got windows XP (which runs in a similar way to 2000) and there was very little i9nfo available. We also had to upgrade our samba version.

A lot of the stuff we found for help on the net didn't include the new config for 2000, NT and XP machines.

He's right you will have to change permissions on the shared directory so that you can write to it. The file I posted is not very secure, it allows anyone to connect, but if the permissons on the share arnt set correctly then you wont be able to write or delete.

I wouldnt personnaly would'nt use /home/downloads as a samba share, I would put it at /downloads.


chmod -R a=rwx /path of top shared folder here
Thats why I wouldnt put a share in /home/downloads. Because that will change the permmisions on every directory under /home which would be very unsecure.
