Testing remote administration via ssh on Internet

Hi folks,

Testing remote administration via ssh on Internet
======================================

I have one broadband with dynamic IP and also a 56K modem also with dynamic address from the same ISP. Can I test remote-admin/setup via SSH/Internet on two Linux PCs, one connected to broadband and another to 56K modem.

If YES, then HOW to make it because both with dynamic IP

Thanks in advance.

Well first you need to know the IP number. You can't just blindly try to telnet or ssh to a computer. Secondly, you'll need to make sure the firewall (if you have one) permits incoming connections. Thirdly, you'll need to make sure /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny are set up OK. In hosts.deny you should have the line ALL :ALL. In allow you should specify only the IPs coming from your ISP as being allowed (and anyone else you wish to let in). That way your computer is more secure.

Hi,

Thanks for your advice.

First I will connect both PCs to Internet via ADSL and 56K modems respective. Then I will to locate IP of each PC with "ifconfig". Afterwards I will continue to configure relevant files, etc.

Any point or document related. Thanks

One thing. Are both the computers on the same LAN? If so then the internet IPs are irrelevant. If not then disregard the previous statement.

In addition to what's already been mentioned, I use the free DynDNS service and ddclient to make sure the computer registers a name when it goes online. That way I don't have to worry about IP addresses.

Hi,

One is dialup, 56K modem. Another is broadband via ADSL modem, provided by the same ISP

Hi,

Thank for your advice which is rather interesting.

Can it work on Linux instead of Windows

If you scroll down a bit on that page you will find a program with they pretty dull and boring name "ddclient" which works well with Linux. That's what I have been using for a couple of years now and I have never had any problems with it.

Hi,

I found "ddclient Â_ v3.6.3" there but the link seemed broken, clicking it without response
