Timing was not the reason. Intel's competing Itanium 64-bit architecture was not accepted by the market for various reasons but mainly because it was too radical, had serious performance issues with legacy 32-bit applications and also too expensive. In the end Intel accepted defeat and licensed successful AMD architecture - hence the amd64 name.
