I'm seeing this too...

bash: netconfig: command not found

same with ipconfig and other similar commands. Which displays:

[root@LinBox root]# which ipconfig
/usr/bin/which: no ipconfig in (/usr/kerberos/sbin:/usr/kerberos/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/root/bin)

Fedora Core 2 2.6.8-1.521

From these posts, I learned that "su -" is important, vs. "su", but this did not solve my problem. I'm still unable to locate several of these shell commands.

Tried using KSH as well, with the same results

I used the Find utility to look for ipconfig, and found ipconfig.c and .h, (among others... plipconfig.xxx, etc...)... since the code and headers exist, is it possible that I actually need to compile ipconfig before I can use it?

Check if you have tcpip tools installed and use your distro's package manager to install it.

ipconfig has never worked on my Mandrake box - ifconfig does
tried that?

Well... I'm not sure how to check for an installed program, but I did try ifconfig instead of ipconfig... that works.

But what about other common commands? What I'm really trying to do is alter the computer name, since even though my Win2K machine can see "localhost", it won't let me browse it, because the Win2K box itself has a duplicate "localhost" (maybe I should have shut down IIS before trying all this???)...

I think I may have been successful in changing the name to LinBox using a graphical network tool... I think this because the Linux prompt now shows LinBox..(see above... "whick displays:..." , and this name also appears in "My Network Places / Computers Near Me" on my WinBLOWS (Win2k) box... but since all the tutorials and books I'm refering to say I should use netconf, I wanted to run it to be certain... unfortuantely, netconf is also "not found".

Bathory, can you tell me how I'd go about checking to see if specific tools are installed? Is there also a way to get a list of all available shell commands?

note: When I installed Fedora, (2.6.5-1.358, then updated via the Internet to the version listed earlier... //that took almost 24 hours using a cable modem, btw//...), I selected the "install everything" option.

Any TCP/IP configured PC should have it's local loopback network interface i.e. 127.0.0.1 referenced as localhost. For some reason RH/Fedora uses localhost as the default hostname.

BTW the command is netconfig not netconf.

K3V, please try not to hijack others posts ... the
issue you had is unrelated to the other guys problem.
