Gparted - to "flag" or NOT to "flag" as "raid" ?

It seems that "GParted" "Flag" option is sometime useful and sometime not.

Since my continuing saga with using mdadm ( please do not flag ( no pun intended ) this post as repost.
I am looking for single answer - nothing to do with mdadm /RAID

What does setting "Flag" in GParted to "raid" really do?
I have not seem ANY differences in RAID behavior.

I can't tell from the gparted man page, but what I think it means is type 0xFD is used instead of 0x83 for Linux native partitions. I use 0xFD on MBR disks myself, but am not aware of in what context(s) it makes any difference in behavior.

In building a new desktop, I attempted to use a drive that had been formerly part of a RAID 1 configuration. The install cd could not see the drive to install to it, because the raid flag was set on it. At the time, I couldn't figure out how to remove that flag. Looks like (g)parted is the answer. I'll have to dig that drive out of the parts pile and try again.
