id "2", "3", "4", "5"respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes

I have a client who has a dell poweredge server running linux. Today he came in and it was booting over and over. All it does is give the error id "2", "3", "4", "5"respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes followed by the killing process..... This is occuring over and over. First I am a newibe to Linux and am frankly lost. What is happening and what can i do to fix it. ANY HELP WILL BE VERY MUCH APRECIATED!!

It sounds like one of the configuration files such as /etc/profile or /etc/bashrc has a conflict. I had this issue when we set timeout in profile.d and we also had it set in /etc/bashrc. I was still able to get to a login prompt though just no gui. Do you get a login prompt if you hit enter or anything?

Have you tried breaking out of it with a control+c or control+d? Also if you can try to ssh to the box. If you are able to ssh in then just check some of the startup files. bashrc profile profile.d ...Sadly it could be several issues that are causing it, find out from client what he or she was doing on the box before it started doing this. It will probably give you a good indication as to where to look.
