Hi all,

Thanks for help we are located in South Florida and are having an ongoing observation with web pages.

Often, very often I see that I am viewing pages and the browser stops working. We get the message: failed to load page. first, I am using Linux Mint 6. The easiest example is provided when you open Firefox the home page as set to www.linuxmint.com and the page loads up fine, but when I leave the page to google or go elsewhere you can't return to www.linuxmint.com

I have a Win2k laptop and it also gets the same result.

The problem also appears when browsing over many pages, the same thing will occur. Leaving the web page and going to another site is fine, but returning to the failed location gives: failed to load page. But the win2k laptop does not have this problem.

Closing the browser and restarting it does not solve the issue.
What can I check with the linux system relating to this intermitant web browsing issue?

Any thoughts?

Hi, welcome to LQ,

and it sounds to me as if your issues stem from further
upstream, maybe your ISP? What type of network connection
are you using?

We have comcast cable. We are using the tv cable company's modem. Comcast to be specific. I can reach other sites when the problem occurs. Also, the Win2k laptop or other computers that are in the same household network never have this problem. Its a bummer as I really like linux but I can not rely on the web results. Badly would like to break away from Microsoft

The pc that has this issue is a P4 with 1 gig of ram loaded with Linux Mint. I reinstalled it just last week to rule that out. The hard drive is established with 20 gig ext3 partition and a hefty swap drive.

I held back posting to see if people more knowledgeable than I could help. I too wondered if the problem might be from your ISP. If I understood your original post, some portion of your problems are replicated by win2K and some others are not? Did I understand that correctly?

A couple of other questions: Do you ever observe the problem the first time you visit a particular website? Once you've encountered the problem with a website, what does it take to again display the page correctly? A reboot?

That is not what your first post said; which is it?
To me this reads: "Win2k and Linux share the same problem".

Well, I tried to think OTB.

What I found was that when pasting this reply the problem again occurred. My testing provides that if I power cycle the Belkin router the hangs recover until the next time, which form the linux box is very often. Like minutes away often.

Win2K does not have this problem. That is where things are different.

I have a comcast cable modem and to that I have connected a Belkin wired/wireless router. It is rather new, but is 1.5 years old.

Interseting: I can connect any windows pc direct connect to the comcast cable modem and evenually get it to work with the internet, but I can not direct connect the linux box???

Linux will only work when wired to the router!?#$@!@ And it is only until it hangs on some sites; I can surf away to other sites, but not to the hung site until after I reboot the router.

I did change the ether net card and had the same result. I could change the router, but that does not explain why I can't direct connect the linux box to the modem?

Any thoughts why I can't direct connect or why I need to reboot the router when the problem occurs?

I'll check belkin for updates and related linux questions.

I have friends who have had bad experiences w/ Belkin KVM's, routers, & cards -- it seems that they (Belkin) should have stuck w/ making cables.

Can you borrow another brand of router & swap it for the Belkin -- to see if that fixes the problem?

I will check with the neighbors and see if they have another brand of router. This will take either a day if one of them have a different brand or a few or more days to get one otherwise.
