Hearing line-in signal from audio cassette player in Mint 17.1

2015-01-01

I have an audio cassette player connected to my Linux Mint 17.1 computer's line-in jack. I don't hear anything when I play a cassette.

I've run the following pactl command and installed pavucontrol successfully: $ pactl load-module module-loopback

Since I am a newbie in this matter, any help will be much appreciated.

Hi:

I looked in the Mint Forum and I wasn't able to find any thread that was close to getting audio to work with a cassette player; sorry.

I was familuar with pavucontrol but I discovered that "pavucontrol" requires gtkmm and glademmm installed.
It's one this page under REQUIREMENTS:-
http://freedesktop.org/software/pulseaudio/pavucontrol/

I'm not sure but that might be why you aren't getting sound from the cassette player.

http://www.gtkmm.org/en/

I looked for 'glademmm' in the trusty repository under sound and I didn't see it.
http://packages.ubuntu.com/trusty/sound/

Maybe try:
Code:
sudo apt-get install glademmm
To see if your Mint see's the cassette player you can run:
Code:
lsusb
and see if it's (description of the player) mentioned in the output.

Maybe other members more savy with sound will chime in and be able to advise you.

also, you may need a preamp depending on the audio out amplifier of your cassette player

basically everything you can plug into one of those 3.5mm jacks should be possible to hear.
(and certainly won't get listed in lspci output.)

but i fear it's not as simple as just plugging it in.

i currently only have a 2-way plug on my mint laptop (like for headsets) - i can see the signal coming in but it's not being rooted back to the output. i'm sure all this is possible with pulseaudio.

btw, if you are using the headphone out from your cassette, you don't need to preamp it anymore.

just for troubleshooting, you might want to install audacity and see if you can catch the signal.

it's also possible that your soundcard and/or linux don't differentiate between mic in and line in. try both.
