Luckybackup Root version doesn't open

Hi All,

I just installed luckybackup, a front-end for rsync on my Debian system. It by default installs a user client and a "super user" (root) client. I need the super user client to backup several user accounts. The regular client opens fine. When I select the super user client I enter my root password but then nothing happens, no gui window. I tried this on an Ubuntu machine with the same results. Not finding anything online about this. Also., I logged into my root account and tried from there (hated to do that)- still no go.

Thanks

I don't know this tool, but:

Luckybackup has a non-graphical mode: http://luckybackup.sourceforge.net/manual.html#terminal. What do you get when you try it?

Furthermore, there should be a log file ~/.luckyBackup/logs. Any relevant log messages?

Find a better tool - one with current (active) support and development.

True. Release of most recent version 0.50 was on Nov 18, 2018.

Normally "root" (or a sudo'd program) has no access to the graphical screen unless that is owned by root (that is: you are logged on as root and started the graphical environment as such).
As ubuntu doesn't have such a possibility (don't know about Debian), you normally can only use TEXTmode applications as root. There are ways around that, but they are non-trivial and rather difficult to do through sudo.
This is because X client need access to the .Xauthority file from the logged-on user because the X server will only accept connections from client applications that provide that authority key.

userzero,

You will probably do a lot better with grsync, the GUI version of rsync:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/grsync/

I use it regularly and it works perfectly.
