Normally "root" (or a sudo'd program) has
no access to the graphical screen unless that is owned
by root (that is: you are logged on as root and started the graphical environment as such).
As ubuntu doesn't have such a possibility (don't know about Debian), you normally can only use TEXTmode applications as root. There are ways around that, but they are non-trivial and rather difficult to do through sudo.
This is because X client need access to the .Xauthority file from the logged-on user because the X
server will only accept connections from client applications that provide that authority key.
