installed print-scan prints beautifully but will not scan

I have a HP Photosmart 5520 all in one print and scan.
It prints beautifully but my laptop does not recognise it as a scanner.

is there a software to correct this problem

Have you got sane, and xsane installed? The hplip driver has a setup program you will need to run also.

Some distros need extra things configured, such as which groups are allowed to access the scanner.
