Talking Linux on multiple hardware platforms

Success story: Debian on a 386-33 and AMD-K6 laptop and a SPARC20, all running the same packages, interacting perfectly. This is a success story all by itself!

The 386-33 was on floppies in 1996, the laptop and SPARC were from CD-Rom.

When I install Debian, I choose to do it with the text based interface. I find it the most universally successful, since on the SPARC I was using the serial console without even a keyboard or screen attached to the machine. The text install is interactive, selecting from menus and lists rather than having to know all the options ahead of time.
