Slackware 9.1 - Evolution install

*12/4/03 EDIT: There is now a Slackpack for Evolution 1.4.5 for Slack 9.1 HERE

I got Evolution installed in Slack 9.1 today without Dropline-Gnome. Dropline was created for Slack 9 (though they are working on a 9.1 version) and I couldn't get it to install so I decided to try getting Evolution by itself. It wasn't really that hard

First: Download Evolution 1.4 here: http://slackpacks.tchelinux.com.br/
I used version 1.4.4 for Slackware 9.

Install with $ installpkg filename.tgz

Now you'll have to satisfy some dependancies.
First on the list is libsoup-2.0.so.0 which can be downloadedhere
I used libsoup-1.99.23-i686. Again, $ installpkg file.tgz

Next came libgtkhtml-3.0.so which I foundhere

Next, I needed libgal-2.0.so.3 which was tough to find. I wound up getting it in RPM format here
I then used: $ rpm2tgz filename.rpm to change it to a slackpack and installed again with installpkg filename.tgz (rpm2tgz is a great util )

And voila! I am using Evolution, my favorite mail/calender app for Linux. If you are also using Slack 9.1, this should be all it takes to get it working. I did the full 9.1 install, so...

*update: I am realizing some of the same bugs I had when I updated Slack 9 with Dropline via swaret to Slack 9.1 though. The most annoying is not being able to close Evolution without killing it. You have to make sure to kill all the evolution processes to restart it. Sorting out these few bugs is only a few items away on the priority list I'll post any progress.

----------------------------------
Over the last few days I have installed the following:

gnome-vfs-1.0.1-2.i386.rpm
liboaf0-0.6.10-1.ximian.1.i586.rpm
GConf-1.0.9-4.ximian.4.i386.rpm
libxml-1.8.17-3.ximian.1.i386.rpm

All rpm's were converted with the rpm2tgz tool.

These seem to have stopped the problem of having to kill Evolution.

It's included in Slackware. It's a Slack-specific tool. I know I had it in 9, and now 9.1. Can't speak for any versions before that though.

following your steps, I now have evolution running on my slackware 9.1 box. Thank you very much.

I do notice, however, that there are some lingering processes after i exit evolution. Do you see these as well?

Here they are:

00:00:00 /usr/libexec/gconfd-2 14
murray 30391 1 0 21:19 ? 00:00:00 /usr/libexec/bonobo-activation-server --ac-activate --ior-output-fd=18
murray 30393 1 0 21:19 ? 00:00:00 /usr/libexec/evolution/1.4/evolution-wombat --oaf-activate-iid=OAFIID:GNOME_Evolution_Wombat_InterfaceCheck
murray 30395 1 0 21:19 ? 00:00:00 /usr/libexec/evolution/1.4/evolution-alarm-notify --oaf-activate-iid=OAFIID:GNOME_Evolution_Calendar_AlarmNo

thanks,

Murray

Glad it worked for you

Yes, I do have those processes. It seems like I remember them hanging around after exit even back when I used Dropline Gnome though. Not sure why.

I had a tough time with that one too, so I don't really know other than waiting for the site to come back up.

You do know there is a Slack pack availiable now right? That should take care of the dependency issues. I put the link at the very top of this thread.

Good Luck!

If I hadn't accidently wiped out my /data partition awhile back I'd be able to just give it to you.

i get the dependency issue WITH the slackpack.

what's even weirder is that i had an earlier version of evolution installed that was working, but i uninstalled it b/c i wasn't using the program at the time. now installing from that same slackpack also gives the dependency error. weird. i must have removed something else between then and now, but i have no idea what.

That sucks! Wish I still had my downloads... I keep a 70gb partition for movies, mp3s, pics. I would also use it for various packages I download that I want to keep 'safe' but dont want to burn as they will be outdated relatively soon. Well, I was walking someone through creating a new partition then moving his /home directory to it and I didn't want to mess up the steps and cause him problems, so I sudo went through them myself. Somehow, all the data from said partition got lost. The partition was still there, just nothing on it....

Just to bump this thread with another success story, yesterday I finally decided that I wanted to get Evolution working on my Slackware box.

I'm sick of Kmail, and I've never been overly fond of Mozilla or its mail client. Opera's mail handler isn't bad, but I wanted something with more features, and I remember really liking Evolution when I was on Mandrake, so I thought I'd knuckle down and figure it out.

I went to LinuxPackages.net and downloaded the .tgz for Evolution that they had posted up there.

Ran "installpkg" on it, and it went through just fine.

Evolution wouldn't run, because of the "libgtkhtml-3.0.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory" message that everybody seems to get.

I googled that and found an rpm of libgtkhtml, did an "rpm2tgz" on it and then an "installpkg" to install the resulting .tgz.

Evolution still wouldn't run, claiming that it needed something else.

Googled, found an rpm of the new missing dependency, did the same thing.

Evolution RAN!

However, when I tried to create a new mail message, it bombed out claiming that GtkHTML wouldn't start.

I Googled again but found nothing that worked. I tried LinuxPackages.net again and found a .tgz for GtkHTML that installed and now Evolution works perfectly.

I wish I had seen this thread before I went through that, but to be honest, I probably would have had slight variances in my experience that would have made the specifics useless anyway.

From what I've seen, this is just how some things are going to work. You just have to be patient and persistent and get really good at using Google and other sites to find what you need.

If you are, you can get things to work.

Just thought I'd relate this because it seems like I keep seeing threads from people who are frustrated and are thinking about giving up. Just keep at it, folks. It'll come to you sooner or later. But nobody said it was always going to be easy.

All I did was download the tgz from linuxpackages.net installed and all worked fine. I could not send e-mails though. I had to take all commented lines and spaces out of my /etc/hosts file for it to send e-mail ever since than things are great. Wonder why its looking at my hosts file ?!?!?

I'm not really sure.

I ran across something that advised the same thing, so I vi'd my /etc/hosts file before I even started the Evolution installation and did likewise. I figured that it couldn't hurt anything... comments and blank lines don't accomplish anything anyway, as far as applications go.

It seems to work okay for me, but I never tried running it before I whacked the comments from my hosts file, so I can't say for sure if it would have been an issue had I not done that.
