We are a very small company in London, England, with a debian/ubuntu server and 6 computers networked to it (half are ubuntu and half are windows). Although everything works as is, we are locked out of the server as we do not have the passwords and also want to check for keyloggers and backdoors. Once the server is secure and locked down we want occasional maintenance once a month and maybe extra times when we need to slightly modify the system.
This is a small job and should not be difficult for anyone with Linux experience.

Any server that has been compromised, cannot be trusted again. It does not state how it is that you lost the passwords.

I can tell you from experience is, dont trust any servers that have been compromised.

It only takes an hour or two to setup a new server that can be trusted, and then start securing that as needed.

The other gentleman is right for saying that you will be better off buying or build a new server. you should make sure your server is hardening before you put it online.

If your machine is not mission-critical and can be offline for 1 hour, your safest choice will be to immediately disconnect it from any networks.
Beyond that, it may be prudent to turn off the system to prevent any malicious software from additional destruction, infection, or other activities.

From there, it's possible to recover the system, including passwords.

Depending on the situation, it doesn't *need* to be a time-consuming matter, but it can be.
