Um, considering the fact that the Google search is personalized, it was actually a pretty terrible advice.
I was considering that... and then the the next post in that thread ended up being a "look at this first" link to the first hit I got. So that query actually does get people consistent results.
I also specifically asked if that obvious query did not give him the information he needed. If his personalized results turned out to be completely different, then the door was open for him to say no. That doesn't mean it was not the correct recommendation for a first step.
While it's admittedly a relatively small change, having the attitude that nothing can be improved or changed is toxic and not one you'll see at LQ.

Stating that this small, purely cosmetic, change won't really solve anything is not really equal to "having the attitude that nothing can be improved".
"As a newer user, I just want to point out this thread is silly, there aren't any issues to be resolved and the solutions won't really change anything."
I too added to this post as Helpful. It really should be LQ Helpful.
LQ Newbie
Member
Senior Member LQ Guru, LQ Muse, LQ 5k Club, LQ Sage, LQ Veteran and LQ Addict
Why are only Newbie and Guru words attached with LQ?
Why not Member and Senior Member too?
If the change has been made for style, then IMO style should be followed
everywhere.
BTW, I don't think LQ Guru would be less intimidating for the newbie
because since the word Guru means teacher, so LQ Guru would mean a teacher
recognized by LQ or a teacher at LQ.

I really liked the sarcasm here.

If you're put off by being advised to do a web search, or are intimidated by titles, then you are far too sensitive.
If you're worried about upsetting people by telling them to do a web search, then you're too much under the malign influence of political correctness.
Wow. I have just discovered this thread and waded through from start to finish.
My personal preference is that the post count and reputation points count are maintained, despite the problems that can occur. My suggestion would be to have a %Helpful (reputation points * 100 / post count).
I have been at LQ long enough to have observed the phenomenon of a newly registered member rapidly building the post count by posting inconsequential comment, or duplicated information, or requests for information already supplied, on a rapid fire basis in a seeming quest to achieve "Guru" (now LQ Guru) status. The reputation points count can be used to check whether the posts have been worthwhile.
I think that the post count is useful when answering questions at LQ. The information supplied in a reply to a question often needs to be different for a recently registered member with a single digit post count to that for a long time member. (You can caught out by this, more than once I have supplied a simplistic initial answer only to find the OP is actually highly experienced.)
As to the post count and reputation points being intimidating, I have some sympathy that initially they are. However the advice to people new to LQ is to lurk for a while before posting a reply. Once you have a feel for how the site works, the intimidation passes. Worthwhile information is not changed by the post count of the supplier.

I only recalled recently another reason why I think post counts are a good thing to see -- they show how many times a poster has not broken the rules here at LQ. If you see that somebody regularly posts here it means that they've not posted any SPAM nor anything offensive or dangerous. It's nice to know that somebody has been posting on this site a lot, whether their answers are good or bad, and been able to keep to the rules and not be banned.
I suppose that may seem an odd point to some but perhaps it's not just me who feels like this?
