Login as root

I have recently installed mandriva 2007 i used to use PCLinuxOS but i have found that if you try to login as root on mandriva 2007 it gives me a message saying "root logins are not allowed" can any one tell me why it is doing this?

Try logging in as root and runnning 'su'. It just has security configured like this. I am not sure about how to change it.

AFAIK it's a security feature to prevent you from using the x-server as root (insecure). Log in as your normal user then su or sudo.

so i can only log in as root usin the CLI? i suppose it will have to do it seems a pain in the arse i am used to PClinuxOS you can do root login on the GUI but i didnt know you couldnt on mandriva 07

You can login as user, run console, type

echo $DISPLAY
xhost +127.0.0.1

type 'su' (it worked, I hope?), type

export DISPLAY=<what it should be>

in su session. You can now run any given set of X programs. Is it what you need?

Call me paranoid, but I suspect that irlandes didn't have a broadband connection back then or else he would have been always connected to the internet. So while the rest of the thread is OK I would tend to discount irlandes rant.
