It's not just the loss of screen real estate, it's the complete subpar image quality that gets me. There's a huge difference going from 1280x1024 @ 85hz to 1680x1050 @ 60hz, and dropping the LCD to a non native resolution isn't a good idea. Same reason I've returned our Plasma and LCD flat panel TVs over the years. It's a joke these things are considered higher quality. Granted the $7,000 USD displays are nice - but come on what's a working man supposed to do?

The old CRTs are definitely nice. I actually went from a... 17 or 18 inch monitor at 1151x863@70Hz to this 1280x800@60Hz laptop and while I can't really complain because this thing is 4 or 5 times faster than my old setup (which I plan to turn into a mail/print server one of these days... a gateway box from '98 still has its uses!) and I got it for free, I must say that the squatty screen annoys me sometimes. that extra 63 pixels would come in handy a lot of times. Ah well. I'll save that monitor for when I get another desktop system.

I can definitely tell that it is a slower display. I'll close a window or menu and for a fraction of a second I can still see the outline (of course, that could just be a trick of xcompmgr, couldn't it?).

Now get off my lawn <grin>.

I'm new to Slack, but this setup in xfce suits me.

It looks a bit like Ubuntu, i know. The top panel auto hides, and i think xfce is ultra-fast

I use that very same Slackware "S" logo in place of the "mouse" logo in my XFCE menu on my bottom panel.

Great Slackware icons! This is my desktop at the moment. I've been using Window Maker for a couple of months and have grown to like it despite its age and quirks

Cool! I just used it on my new Desktop. This is KDE 4.3.1 in Slackware64_13. The photo is one I took of the U.S.S. Constellation's mizzen mast when my family and I visited Baltimore this past September.
