Annoying text selection problem in 13.2

One of the most annoying things I've run into since upgrading to 13.2 (from 12.2) is that pretty much any desktop application in which I try to highlight text for cutting, pasting, or copying now requires that I highlight the text twice before it stays selected. It doesn't seem to matter what application I'm using:

* Xemacs/Emacs requires it to select text
* Double clicking on a field in The Gimp to change a filename requires it
* Highlighting text in a terminal window requires it
* Changing settings in gkrellm by highlighting and overwriting requires it
* Etc.

Very, very annoying to say the least. And a real time killer to have to repeat a highlight action. Oddly, I've NOT noticed this happening with Firefox. There may be others that are behaving normally but haven't been taking detailed notes on which ones are and which ones aren't.

Background: OpenSUSE 13.2 x86_64, KDE desktop, nVidia driver.

Has anyone else seen this behavior before?

TIA...

odd
i do not have this issue
and never saw it in
12.2,12.4 ,13.1 and not in 13.2

please make a NEW test user and see if this happens in that user

i am betting it is from upgrading between MAJOR versions
12 to 13 was never supported

Hard to believe that upgrades cannot properly import settings from previous versions of the desktop but that does seem to be the case although I don't think it's a major version upgrade of KDE itself. Anyway, my test account didn't exhibit the text selection problem. I seem to recall having something like this happen years ago. Having users rebuild their desktop settings from scratch is, IMHO, something that shouldn't be required at this point but I guess we still have to go through this BS. So it looks like I'll have to spend an evening redoing all my settings and custom menu options. (Even though the lion's share of my config files/subdirectories were not brought over from the previous home directory.) Oh Joy!

Anyway... thanks for the pointer. Now I'm off to destroy my user account so I can rebuild it.

hey,

I had the same issue. In my case, the solution was to remove "parcellite" using Yast. It is some weird utility to manage your clipboards. Maybe there is less brutal way (e.g. reconfigure it). But copy-pasting appears to be working without that so I do not care.

I had the same issue too. I use several X sessions using Xming on Windows.

I have uninstalled all instances of parcellite to be able to at least have a "half wit" copy/paste.

In fact, parcellite in Xming sessions have occasionally been disturbing file copy/paste in Windows since at least OpenSuse 13.1, which is bad enough. But when there are at least one OpenSuse 13.2 X session on a Windows desktop, copy/paste becomes totally useless, if not to say dangerous.

I have seen race condition between two instances of OpenSuse 13.2 desktops in Xming, initiated by <COPY> in one of them, that has ended with one of the sessions being killed off after a long time of deadlock/freeze.

I have also had rather dangerous issues with interruptions in keyboard handling in since i started to use OpenSuse 13.2. Most annoying is it causing meta keys to hang in emacs running on OpenSuse 13.1, when there are OpenSuse 13.2 Xming sessions on the same Windows desktop.

All this disappear when removing all instances of parcellite.
"Someone has done a bo-bo".

So my advice is to uninstall all instances of parcellite.
Let the developer beg us for reinstalling it when the bugs are said to be fixed!

-

All these bugs stem from people playing around with things that used to work before.
"If it ain't broken - Don't fix it"!

But the reality is probably that these people try to solve a bug, (or introducing a feature that nobody wanted), while not realizing that their lack of skill at the same time introduces a bunch of new bugs.

In the current situation i guess that i am not the only one to simply resign and uninstall, instead of putting effort into reporting/fixing the bugs. I am not willing to put much effort into reporting/fixing bugs in code that soon will be over-washed with new bugs because so many people overestimate their programming skills and with energetic ambition try to change everything just to put their mark on it.

Take a look at:
http://parcellite.sourceforge.net/

Right at the top one can read the following message:
Quote:
Parcellite Trim functions and deselection
October 8, 2014 3:01 pm

Since I’ve had several bug reports on deselection issues (many of which are valid), I need to clarify the deselection bug regarding any of the trim/ignore functions.

If you are using primary and one of these functions in Parcellite, you will get your text deselected for Gnome applications (and others). It does make some sense if the application is monitoring the clipboard for changes and sees that it changed, it should deselect the text, because whatever is selected is no longer in the clipboard.

If someone knows a way around this, I’d be glad for the input.

Please note the date. (highlighted in red).

Latest release of parcellite seems to be:
Quote:
1.1.9 is Released
October 1, 2014 3:12 pm
OpenSuse 13.1 currently offer parcellite 1.1.6-2.1.3.

When was it released?
Quote:
1.1.6 is Released
August 1, 2013 7:18 pm
OpenSUSE 13.2 currently offers parcellite 1.1.8-3.1.4.
Quote:
1.1.8 is Released
July 3, 2014 12:22 pm
And a link to the bugtracker: http://sourceforge.net/p/parcellite/bugs/

So the latest version of parcellite is not offered as an update in either of OpenSUSE 13.1 or 13.2.
How come?
