/etc/fstab permission denied

As root [with red prompt] am given "permission denied" when use "/etc/fstab" ; is there something to get by this? My wifi card has had its labeling mysteriously altered from startup "at boot" to "connected by cable" which allows no activation and no way to change it back, so need to track down problem, and thought stating at fstab was best idea, but am not allowed to open it!!!

If you are in fact the root user you should not get permission problems on that file but you can verify the perms with an ls -l /etc/fstab. If for some reason there is no read perms for the root user you may want to chmod 644 /etc/fstab and then you can get in

Just typing in "/etc/fstab" won't do anything and will give you permission denied of course. You need to use an editor like emacs,vim,nano,pico, etc to edit it like this:

editor /etc/fstab

I don't think editing /etc/fstab is going to help with your WiFi problem because it's for auto-mounting your drives. I'm not sure how the filesystem tables can help but if it can, I hope I helped too.

Also a thank you to you TommyC7; one text said just to enter as I did, but in another guide found you do need to use an editor.
