Whaddayamean by "restarts"? Graphics programs will occasionally crash your xserver, and in most cases that means it jumps you back to the login screen when it restarts, but it's very rare for a user-level program to actually force a system restart.
Without any extra info, I'm going to guess the former: GE is causing your x to crash for some reason.
