SLES 9 boot problems after update to SP3

After upgrading to SLES 9 SP3 the PC would not boot.
The error msg 'looking for /dev/sda2', then a bunch of characters on a screen and all halts to the '$' prompt.
The Novell site suggested booting from an installation CD, removing a new kernel, and fixing symbolic link to the initrd; however it doesn't work since after booting from CD it still can't find a hard drive, and there are no links in /boot directory. The system is an HP PC with dual core Intel Xion processor and a SCSI hard drive (seen by the BIOS).
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

PS. The HD controller is Embedded Adaptec SATA HostRaid-8130.
