Yast crashes with local directory source

Running Suse 9.1 on various machines, this problem seems universal and consistent.

Using YAST to install extra packages works perfectly from CD, or from the internet using FTP or HTTP.

From time to time I have added a local directory to my install sources list, but whenever such a source is enabled and I then try to install packages, YAST gets as far as "Reading package information" then crashes. The same thing happens if I add the local directory from YAST itself, which gives the URL dir:///home/ed/foo, or if I add it via the right-click menu from the directory itself, which results in the URL file:/home/ed/foo

I have no idea where to go from here, and haven't found anything useful on Google. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Ed Lazda
