How do i get the ubutnu Gui up, i seem to be stuck in CLI :o

Its on a different pc

i just get a single ~ on everyline and then at the bottom
ECTFSTAB[NEWFILE] 0,0-1 All

no idea what it means tho...

The right command is

vi /etc/fstab

you probably are typing

vi /ETCFSTAB or something like that. Keep in mind that linux is case sensitive and we need the file fstab in folder /etc

nope, i typed what it says although what it acutally says at the bottom is
"/ect/fstab" [NEWFILE]

if that makes any difference

okay here is what it says
<file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
/dev/hda2 / ext3 defaults,errors=remount-ro 0
/dev/hda4 /home vfat defaults 0 0
/dev/hda1 /windows mtfs defaults 0 0
/dev/hda3 none swap sw 0 0

does this tell you anything?

Ok. First

Code:

sudo vi /etc/fstab

and add in front of the line nr4 the # charcter. Now it should look like this

#/dev/hda4 /home vfat defaults 0 0

You said you CAN login as root so i guess you have set a root password.

Just to keep things simple reboot and login as root

Code:

mkdir /home/tom
chown tom /home/tom
chgrp tom /home/tom
reboot

how do i reboot, once i enter the fstab i can't seem to execute commands there fore any changes i make aren't being saved
when i type the mkdir bits, i get the same errors as earlier.
File exists
operation not permitted

any ideas why

in vi editor you should press Esc several times and then type :wq! (exactly as seen) to save changes.

Ok, i've done that and no errors there,
but now when i start up, ubuntu loads all the modules... goes throught the list ok until mounting local filesystem- it fails on that.

How do i fix this ?

Please help

d/w fresh install and properly partitioned hard drive fixes everything.
