keyboard and mouse lost

Hi,

I have an intermittent problem with losing the keyboard and mouse. I can use the computer (Kubuntu 12.04) with no problem. If I leave it for a while and when I return sometimes the mouse and/or keyboard are dead. No light in the mouse, no response to any keystroke combinations. Sometimes rebooting restores things, but today no such luck for 3 retries. The keyboard and mouse are both USB and the computer is an HP Pavilion dv6 with 8GB RAM.

When the problem occurs, I can boot a live distro and it runs OK.

Occasionally when I boot Kubuntu the disks are checked. I think I may have a disk problem because the percent done number stalls from time to time but the scan completes and no errors are reported.

I've tried to run MHDD, but cannot get it to see the disk.

This is an extract from /var/log/syslog for the previous (failed) and current (working so far) sessions.

When I re-plug there is a very brief blink from the cursor, then dead. It's like the system is rejecting it. The same happens if I try a different mouse.

If I checked lsusb output on a previous episode I don't remember. I did not check it this last time.

Could be this bug...

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...x/+bug/1088829

When I unplug my (healthy) USB rat now, this is the chatter in dmesg...

[160502.699178] usb 3-2.2: USB disconnect, device number 4
[169640.938790] usb 3-2.4: USB disconnect, device number 3

[169645.667465] usb 3-2.4: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=0
[169645.667468] usb 3-2.4: Product: Microsoft Wheel Mouse Optical\xffffffc2\xffffffae\xffffffae
[169645.667471] usb 3-2.4: Manufacturer: Microsoft
[169645.667650] usb 3-2.4: ep 0x81 - rounding interval to 64 microframes, ep desc says 80 microframes
[169645.675922] input: Microsoft Microsoft Wheel Mouse Optical\xffffffc2\xffffffae\xffffffae as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1c.6/0000:04:00.0/usb3/3-2/3-2.4/3-2.4:1.0/input/input11
[169645.676300] hid-generic 0003:045E:0040.0004: input,hidraw0: USB HID v1.00 Mouse [Microsoft Microsoft Wheel Mouse Optical\xffffffc2\xffffffae\xffffffae] on usb-0000:04:00.0-2.4/input0

And here is the relevant line in lsusb output...

Bus 003 Device 005: ID 045e:0040 Microsoft Corp. Wheel Mouse Optical

Possibly, but I think my problem is different. The bug states that devices are not recognised. In my case the mouse works for a while and then drops out.

If it is the same, perhaps it occurs when the port goes into a low-power state or something...

My computer has one USB-2 (permanent external HDD) and three USB-3 ports for mouse, keyboard, and general use. I will put the external drive on a different port and use the USB-2 for the keyboard and mouse for a while and see what happens.

Looks like the same thing.

I tried moving the USB-2 disk to a USB-3 port and it was not recognised. I got a USB-3 disk today...

Ah! Penny has dropped! I have seen something like this before... except it was the disk drive that gave trouble.

Some usb disk draw too much power. (In fact you are suppose to connect them to Y cables that draw current from two usb ports) My guess is the usb disk is pulling too much current and making the usb host controller flaky.

Speed: So far the only indication of speed I have is copying 6GB of images, average size 3.4MB, in 15 minutes. It's not a good test since the images came from a USB-2 disk...

Power: The USB-2 disk used a single connection, as does the new drive. I have a modified cable I can use to measure volts and amps. I'll see what they draw.
