Do you mean you can't get past the point where it asks to "connect and download an interface for your kernel?"

Note that with Ubuntu (as far as I know) it is NOT a good idea to try and install this by hand, as you seem to be doing. You probably better off taking the machine to an internet cafe or something (or where you have connectivity) and there "apt-get" what you need.

There should be more info on this in the Ubuntu community, or just post here in the Ubuntu form under "how to upgrade nvidia driver" or something similar.

I have done offline installs of the Nvidia driver, but that often means a compile against your kernel source tree (and I'm on Fedora, not Ubuntu). If you are new, this can be a lot of hassle. It might be better just to get connectivity and then figure out what to apt-get to upgrade / install your specific Ubuntu version's Nvidia in the "Ubuntu way" i. e. via automatic package download & installation, versus source download and manual compile and installation.
