I got to the end of a Vector 5.8 install, rebooted and was asked for login and password in the splash screen. No problem there, I entered a username and pwd and they were accepted. Next I was prompted for a net login and pwd. My little home "network' consists of a cable modem and a wireless router and I have never set any passwords. At this point I'm cabled to the router, so wireless is not a factor.
Is the net login required for the Samba option I chose during the install? Re-installing is pretty trivial, but I do intend to set up a file server and I'm going to need Samba.

I don't use Vector Linux so I don't really know about a "net login and pwd". I'm guessing you logged into Vector with a normal user account and possibly clicked on a configuration change setting icon/button that required administrative priviledges and was prompted with a dialog box to enter root and root's password to continue with the change.

Well, just to be clear, I was not attempting anything that requires administrative privileges. I understand the super user login and root password concept very well.
I was logging into a GUI session as user. I was never prompted to create a root or net password during the install. Even though the "create root password" box was checked during the install, I was never prompted to do so. And I never saw any reference to net password during the install. I have used Debian, Mandriva and Xubuntu on the same network and have never seen a net login.
I did another installation opting out of Samba and the result was the same.
I am installing on a pair of PIII 600Mhz 192MB Toshiba Portege laptops, and Vector Linux with Xfce4 seems like a good fit, but I won't know if I can't get past the login

Hi Driftwood,
How did you configure the network option during the install? Because you have three choices and DHCP is the only choice that allows you to get a dynamically assigned IP.
You may also wish to take a look at how your network configuration is set up with regards to DHCP leases. You may have stale IP leases that need to be released before your Vector Laptops can join your network.

I hope this helps,
Hi Thorn
I've actually moved on to another distro because I need that network connection. However, I'd like to give Vector another shot.
I'm almost certain that I chose DHCP because that's all I've ever used
. I have a simple home network and I connect to the internet via cable modem. My ISP assigns my IP address.
I'll run the install CD again after resetting my router and powering down the cable modem and see if things go any differently.
Just to let you know - I re-installed Vector Std 5.8 on the same laptop. I can't say that I care much for the installer, but I'm getting used to it after several repetitions. I don't care for the "re-boot and pick up from the last time" approach. If you choose not to rerun the alsa config routine, for example, you get booted out of the installer and have to start over and run through everything you already did. It's totally possible to end up with an installed system with no users and no root passwd if you don't keep hitting 'yes' to every config option whether you've done it already or not.
The netconf went okay this time, but when you run it you don't get any indication whether it's succeeded or not. You get 5 screens for alsa setup and only 1 for DHCP - seems a bit unbalanced to me. (I'm writing this immediately post-install and my comments are coloured by the fact that I feel like I just went 6 rounds with Mike Tyson.)
I didn't see anything about net password or login this time.
Being totally new to anything Slackware based, I will admit to lots of operator errors and wrong turns during the install(s) - I was wishing I was back installing Sarge. I'm sure also that the reason the install moves along so quickly is that there's no excessive eye candy and idiot-proofing (which I could obviously benefit from).
In any case, I have arrived at the point where I can start using the system and tweaking it to my own liking.
And, not meaning to sound like an ingrate; the Xfce4 desktop looks great and things are ticking along at a very good clip on this PIII 600MHz system. Thanks to any of the developers who may be following the forum.

Dear Driftwood,
I agree with you that the Vector Installer is difficult to use. I too had difficulty using it to install version 5.8 on a test computer that I have. However, once I was able to successfully install the OS I was pleased with the results. I was even able to establish a network connection using my power line network adapter to connect to my own Lan. The only time I had trouble with that connection was during a time when my wife was on-line and using every computer on the network. Hence my suggestion to you to check the DHCP leases issued by your router.
There is also a dedicated Vector Linux forum at Vectorlinux.com that can help you with any Vector specific issues that you may have.
You might want to take a peek at your /etc/samba/smb.conf file. You might have a line that says "security = domain" or "security = ADS". Another possibility is that it uses the default "security = user" and it is asking what your username & password is on a windows machine. On a windows network using a domain controller, you need to authenticate with a domain controller. It is possible that your Vector Linux may have set samba up as a domain controller.
I use "security = user". I have the same username & password when I boot up to XP as my Linux username & password, and I used the "smbpasswd" program as root to enter it as well in samba's smbpasswd table.
