Question Compilation works, execution doesn't

Thank you for putting up this great compilation guide. Even though the kernel compiles without any problems, on boot up it will be loaded by LILO but all I get is a blank screen and a system hang-up.

I am running Slackware 11.0 and have checked that I meet all the software requirements as stated for the kernel. I am using the 2.6.18.3 + BadRAM patch (get it at (not allowed to put in URLs to other sites, so just enter badram in google and you'll find it)). Compilation does not return any errors whatsoever.
The generated bzImage is used, the System.map file is available (both in /boot), but on boot up LILO loads the kernel, but when it should change to the buffered console I get a blank screen instead. I have tried different configurations including those used for the precompiled slack kernels.

Since using your instructions seem to work for everybody else I have little idea where my problem might originate.

Any help is welcome.

Check if you have support for your file system compiled in the kernel, and not as a module. If you have Reiserfs:
Code:
bash-3.1$ grep -i reiserfs .config
CONFIG_REISERFS_FS=y        <--- here y, not m
# CONFIG_REISERFS_CHECK is not set
# CONFIG_REISERFS_PROC_INFO is not set
# CONFIG_REISERFS_FS_XATTR is not set
bash-3.1$
Cheers, Leon.

Yes, I am aware of the fact that you have to compile the code for the root file system in the kernel or use initrd.

thanks for everyones help on this subject it helped out and solved every problem I was having the only problem I had this forum didn't fix was my ethernet card and if anyone issues `lspci` and gets a return of 02:0a.0 Ethernet controller: Linksys NC100 Network Everywhere Fast Ethernet 10/100 (rev 11).. The driver for that is 'tulip.o' that you can build right into the kernel. thanks again guys! if anyone still needs help with tulip private message me.

When I compiled the latest kernel and rebooted into it, the screen went black and stayed that way. Is it because it didn't load my video card into the new kernel? If so, is there any way to put it in there without going back through the process.

What run mode are you in? Are you booting straight into X. When compiling a new kernel I always change the runmode to boot into the console in case there is a problem with X. In fact I always find that Nvidia drivers need recompiling before X will run.

No, I go straight to the console. I use startx to get into x after I log in. Unless, that somehow changed with my new kernel. My video card is an ATI Rage 3D Pro, I think. It's pretty old.

I just installed slackware 11 and it's using the 2.4 kernel. I just read the "instructions" to do a kernel upgrade. I didn't understand most of it because there are a lot of assumptions i am pretty sure i don't know.

Is there a slackware tutorial that specifies every step to do a kernel upgrade and then install the Nvidia driver?

Just put a link here and i'll read some more.

Kernel panic?

How does one fix the kernel panic - not syncing VFS unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(3,2) error?

Thanks in advanced!!!!

You are probably not using the ext2 filesystem and don't have the filesystem drivers that you are using compiled into the kernel. e.g reiserfs or ext3 which are by default loaded as modules. At least, this was my problem earlier today

I fixed this by creating an init ram disk image which contains the required module and is loaded at startup. The module I needed was reiserfs

To do this for my new kernel version 2.6.18 I booted the old 2.4.x version and ran

mkinitrd -c -k 2.6.18 -m reiserfs

You then have to edit the section of the /etc/lilo.conf file for this version and add the line

initrd = /boot/initrd.gz

after the "image = ..." line

Then run lilo

Alternatively you can recompile and reinstall your kernel with the required module compiled into the kernel..
