Nope. I only use XFCE when I'm on battery, because KDE generates too many wakeups on my CPU. Its not as comfortable as KDE is.

At home (=productive use) I use KDE with some applets and it runs very smoothly.

1. I prefer tiling WMs, since they allow me to use all of my screen space and are very effective if used in the right way.
2. I don't bought powerful hardware to waste its power with gadgets on the screen. I want its power being used by the applications I run.

A lot of Slackware users have command line background. Some of them remember the times when the computers offered limited resources and when the programmers wrote economical applications. These circumstances forced the users to save the power of the machines. First graphical interfaces worked on such inefficient machines so users had to save the power even more then in the command line era.

The present fast processors, huge memories, and immense drives can run contemporary overgrown systems and applications. Almost no-one is forced now to save the power of the machine but some people like to use it in a reasonable manner. It assumes not running superfluous services, sluggish environments, and unnecessary applications. Slackware by its structure encourages users to such a savings.

Simple window managers, plain wallpapers, and text-based applications are very economical so a lot of conscious users decide to use them. Slackware users are more conscious than the users of the most popular distributions such as: Mint, Ubuntu, or Fedora.

As if You where writing about me (CBM 128D "tin can"), but how can we expect fresh comers if we give up the impression "Slackware can run on PDP with graphics off"?
And an person lacking the background of those "computing metusalems" might assume exactly that
So yes I want spartan screenshots, but want the "fancy" ones alongside too.

If you have a lot of time you can look through that thread from the beginning and you'll see a lot of plain desktops as well as a lot of fancy ones.

As for the questionable wallpapers I agree my wallpaper with parody of Slackware logo can hurt someone's feelings (see the first post here).

Not too fancy but I like grey themes and I agree too many minimalistic desktops on this thread, maybe it should be split between fancy and plain? I like mine to be interesting but not too distracting ( my xmas desktop is a bit ott, but there you go )

I like both minimalistic and pluralistic desktops. What I don't like, is people who tend to say things like "Oh, my desktop is so minimalistic and cool, not so much fancy shit and stuff like that...". I always wondered why they NEED to say such a thing? Maybe they are simply jealously? Maybe they do not know how to do wonderful conkys, GTK themes e.t.c. so they need to spit out shit on others pluralistic arts?

Minimalistic can be as nice as pluralistic art, get over it!
